“How to Get Students to Give a H.O.T. Presentation: Reinforcing Higher-Ordered Thinking through Student Presentations”

After adapting a critical thinking rubric for student papers, what can one do to reinforce critical thinking beyond the written word?  To further emphasize critical analysis decided to assign meaningful presentations that built upon and reinforced the writing process. This added dimension of public accountability vastly improved the papers I received.  Using the critical thinking rubric drastically reduced the usual problem of hearing one boring drone after another repeat essentially the same information with little originality.  Instead, focusing the students’ attention on the critical aspect of their paper generated lively and unique discussions of their ideas.  These presentations held my interest, and more importantly, the interest of the other students.  I’ll be talking about the process I went through in designing this assignment as well as some of the pitfalls I fell into along the way.
