“Grappling with the Basics:  Thinking Critically about the Observation and Analysis of an Art Object”

I have tried various short writing assignments as a part of teaching large auditorium-sized sections of FA 101.  While multiple-choice examination is adequate for testing student knowledge of basic ideas and vocabulary, student writings are the most effective way to gauge whether students can use their newly acquired knowledge to critically think about a visual art object.
