Karen Weathermon, Writing Programs

“Working in the Middle: Using The Critical Thinking Rubric as a Writing Heuristic”

My participation in the Critical Thinking Project has been a bit unique as I neither assign nor grade writing; instead I run small undergraduate and graduate writers' groups for students enrolled in other writing-intensive courses.  I have found the CT Rubric to be a very useful strategy to help students deeply explore their research topics before and during the drafting process.  I will share my experiences from these small writers' groups and hope to discuss ways that these strategies might be applied in larger classroom situations.
